The Tour Map Project
This project features an illustrated map of both Ramsey and Washington counties, to be used as a learning tool for young students visiting the Recycling and Energy Center.
The creative journey began with a rough outline of the map using a screenshot from Google.
I then researched iconic landmarks and the historical context of the two counties to begin conceptualizing the illustrations that would be at each location.
When I began the process of filling the map with illustrations, I originally tried to emulate the cutout paper style of Eric Carle.
However, towards the deadline of the project, the client wanted to pivot to a simpler, more playful style of illustration, similar to the work of Jordan Sondler (here’s his website).
With a fast approching deadline, I redid the 35+ location illustrations and foliage, allowing only 5 minutes per drawing to avoid too much detail.
The client adored the results.
In addition to the map was a series of vinyl, reusable stickers I illustrated. These are used to demonstrate to the children touring the Recycling and Energy Center where important recycling infrastructure is located in the two counties.
